Problem 2: Quick and Toasty

Three slices of bread are to be toasted under a grill. The grill can hold two slices at once but only one side is toasted at a time. It takes 30 seconds to toast one side of a piece of bread, 5 seconds to put a piece in or take a piece out and 3 seconds to turn a piece over. What is the shortest time in which the three slices can be toasted?

  1. 30 seconds to do one side, and again per bread, therefore each bread takes 60 seconds.
60+60=120, plus only 10 because you can take them in/out at the same time,so...

    120+10+=130

so, the shortest amount of time is 130.

  2. I think the fastest way to bake 3 slices is to put 2 in(10secs) bake(30secs) Flip ONE of them(3secs). Take the one not fliped out(5secs). Put the not cooked one in (5secs). Bake(30secs) Take the one that has both sides cooked out(5secs) Put the other one that we took out earlier in(5secs). Flip both of them(6secs) Bake(30secs) Take both of them out(10secs). So altogether 10+30+3+5+5+30+5+5+6+30+10=139. So I think 139 secs is the shortest time you can bake 3 slices of toast

  3. sorry.... a didn't read the q right.
if there is three slices, then you could put 2 of the slices in at the same time(60 not 120), plus the , and the putting it in (5s), takeing it out 5s. u could then put in the new slice (plus 5s), its two sides(60s), and taking it out.(5s).

so, the minimun time you could take would be 140. im pretty sure this is correct

  4. by the way, goerge, how'd u get six? but that IS a cool idea that goes with it. :)

  5. i think they should put in two them cook them on BOTH SIDES(1min) then just do the same with the other one. which is another minute on top. this how i would cook them cuz i wont bother to do all this math just for SOME TOAST. so altogether its 2 mins but georges plan works beter. btw,WHO IN THE RIGHT MIND WOULD DO THIS JUST FOR OMSE TOAST!?!?!?!? ISNT IT JUST EASIER TO JUST PUT THEM IN A FRIGIN TOASTER IN STEAD OF A GRILL?!?!?!?!?!?! LIKE SERIUOSLY!!!!!!!!

  6. and just to note osme means some its just a typo:)

  7. How is it under 140? I got 159. Is there a trick?

  8. I think it it 136 seconds. (10) to put two pieces in (30) to cook them both on 1 side, then keep one and flip it (3) and switch the others(10). So far thats 10+30+3+10=53. (30) To cook those two which gives you one all done and two half done. Then (5) to put the done one out and another (5) to put the other in. (3) to put the half on the other side, then cook for (30) and take the two out for (10). 10+30+3+10+30+5+5+3+30=136 seconds. (Hope that wasn't too hard to understand)

  9. 1st slise
    put on take off(10sec)
    turn once(3sec)
    each side (60sec)
    2 slices at once
    put on take off(20sec)
    turn both(6sec)
    cook both sides(60sec)
    all together 159

  10. You put in 2 pieces of bread. that takes 10 sec. (5 sec. each,) and then it takes 30 sec. to toast one side. to flip them each would take 6 sec. (three seconds each)and then to toast the other side would take 30 sec. To take them both out would be 10 sec. (5 sec. each). To put the next one in would take 5 sec. and for it to toast would take 30 sec. It takes 3 sec. to flip it, 30. sec to toast the other side and 5. sec to take it out. So you would have to add, 10+30+6+30+10+5+30+3+30+5=159. It would take 159 seconds to toast all of them.

  11. ok i just read that it can be done in less then 140 sec. but i don't know how

  12. ok i dont understand this at all and I am sure im wrong but here goes... ok so u put 2 slizez in thats 10 seconds and 1 minute and 6 seconds to flip both then take of both and get 76 seconds and then put new one on and 63 seconds to cook and 5 to take off and 76+63= is 139 or maybe not... ok one more time... (sigh) so u put two slizez in and thats 10 seconds then toast and flip both for 1 minute and 6 seconds total. now take off and ur at 76 seconds then put new one on cook for minute and 3 seconds and u get 76 + 63 which is uhhh (sigh)139... ok well gl with this ppeeps from the ORIGINATOR OF THE MIGHTY GONTHORIAN AND FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDERMAN OR UHH UHH LIAM now im going to do a rap for u guys.. pt ts pttt ptts suh(imagine beat boxer in ur head... okay so u start of with a piece of TOAST and all u wanna do is make them MOST of them on the grill so hot it could kill 30 seconds a piece hot and fatty grease and now u gotta go and flip like a tip thats six seconds t=so them take em off while theyre hot thats 10 seconds so u at 79 then u put a new one on get a tingle in ur spine and it looks real fine so turn it over name ur dawg rover and then the piece of toast is over when u flip it takes 3 seconds now the toast beckons take me off i am feeling hot and thats how i got 139 seconds. liam out piece dawgs:)

  13. Well, 2 slices 1 side of each will be 30 seconds,
Turn the 2 slices around 3 seconds,
Toast other side of slices 30 seconds,
Put the last slice in and take others out 5 seconds,
Toast one side of the last slice 30 seconds,
Turn the last slice around 3 seconds,
Toast the last side of the last slice 30 seconds,
Add it all up to get 131 seconds.
    I hope this is right!

  14. Ok I'll try this. So What i would do would be this: first i would put two pieces in (5+5=10) and cook them on the one side (30 seconds) and then take one out and flip the other one (5+3=8seconds) then put the other non-toasted one in with that one (5seconds) and then wait for then to toast(30) that would mean that one was completly toasted. So then I would take that one out (5 seconds) then flip the other one (3) and then put on the other one that was half toasted and cook then (30 seconds) Then i would take those two out (5+5=10seconds) So that brings the grand total to: 131 (10+30+8+5+30+5+3+30+10=) so that is my answer!!!!!!!

  15. so first you x the amount of time to toast two sides by 2 then add 9 and 10 (taking it out and turning it over) and you get 2 minutes and 19 seconds.

  16. I cant really explain my answear, so Ill show you a well kind of the "events" in order.
    -toast 2 slices = 30 seconds
-flip both pieces of bread= 6 seconds
-toast same 2 slices (other sides)= 30 seconds
-take the slices out= 5seconds (you can pull both slices out at once)
-put new slice of bread in= 5 seconds
-toast new slice of bread= 30 seconds
-flip slice of bread = 3 seconds
-toast other side = 30 seconds
    TOTAL= 139 seconds

So that would be my answear but... dont you have to take the other piece of toast out?

PS: I guess not since it says it can be done in less than 140 seconds.
PSS:How do you guys get that image?
    PSSS:I agree with Jojo

  17. Hey everyone,
It's Katty! After writing, and then erasing and writing and erasing, I finally found the quickest way to grill (or toast) 3 slices of toast. So first, it takes 10 seconds to put 2 slices of bread in the griller thing. Then, to toast one side of each toast takes 30 seconds. Let's label the toasts, 123 and the sides A&B. So after thirty seconds, sides A for toast 1&2 are toasted. Then it takes 3 seconds to turn piece 1 over and 10 to take out 2 and put in toast 3. Then it takes 30 seconds for side B to toast for toast one and for side A for toast 3. Then it takes 10 seconds to take out toast 1 and put in toast 2, then 3 seconds to flip toast 3 over. Then it takes 30 seconds for side B on toast 2 to toast and side B for toast 3 to toast. Then it takes 10 seconds to take toast 3 and 2 out. So in total it takes 136 seconds. You figure that out by; 10+30+3+10+30+10+3+30+10=136. Or, 30 times 3 +10 times 4+ 3 times 2= 136. That was much longer then I thought it would be so, thats pretty much it.

  18. Put 2 pieces on = 10s. 30s = toast 1 side time. flip 2 pieces = 6s. 30s more for full toast. 10s for 2 pieces taken out. 5s for 1 piece put in. 30s for 1 side toast. 3s for 1 turn. 30s more for full toast. 5s more to take out. 10 + 30 + 6 + 30 + 10 + 5 + 30 + 3 + 30 + 5 = 159s SO that is my final answer...........

  19. I used an Excel spread sheet to figure out how many steps and seconds it took to toast the 3 pieces of toast.

    Step - Activity - Time Spent (s)
    1 - Put 2 pieces on grill - 10
    2 - Grill S1 and S2 - 30
    3 - Flip S1, remove S2, put in S3 - 13
    4 - Grill S1 and S3 - 30
    5 - Remove S1, put in S2, flip S3 - 13
    6 - Grill S2 and S3 - 30
    7 - Remove S2 and S3 - 10
    Total (10+30+13+30+13+30+10) 136 s
(By the way, S=slice and s=seconds)
So there is how you do it!

  20. Toasting time
    30+30=60
    60+60=120

    Putting in and out time
    5+5=10
    10x2=20

    Turning time
    2x3=6

    Answer: 120+20+6=146
